Scrambled Eggs

I knew this week was going to be messed up when one of my reps called last week and asked that I change my plans to be in San Diego all day Tuesday, no problem, they’ll get better use of my time that way. He suggested I rent a car and drive to San Diego Monday night and then leave at lunch to drive back to Orange County to catch my evening flight to Sacramento
No sweat, better yet, I’ll change my flight Tuesday to fly from San Diego to Sacramento rather than from Orange County, and I’ll take a train to San Diego so I don’t have to rent a car.
I literally jumped on a train in the parking lot of the Angels with a ticket I hurriedly purchased in a kiosk outside the station.  Not everyone speaks English here so I asked a couple of people if indeed the train went to San Diego, because it left the station heading east. No problem, I’m on the right train so sit and relax. Nice ride down the coastline to San Diego, I knew it was time to get off because the next stop was Tijuana. No, just kidding, the old station downtown was the last stop. I got to my hotel and sure enough, no reservation. I told them I prepaid for the room (trying to save $20, remind me not to do that again) After a 30 minute telephone conversation the clerk let me have my room, and told me I’ll have to fight out the refund with Hilton. Thanks Dan, if that’s your real name…………..We’ll have to see how if the customer is always right.
All seemed well until our breakfast meeting on Tuesday, my rep told me he had been sick early in the morning, then proceeded to get sick outside during our breakfast. Yeah, he excused himself, fortunately I hadn’t checked out of my room so I went back to my hotel and cooled my heels while he went home in anticipation of feeling better, and making calls in the afternoon
About 10:00 I left the hotel and walked one block over to the harbor. Lo and behold there sat an old friend of mine, the Surprise, formerly called the HMS Rose. Still not sure exactly how she got there, but after Master and Commander the studio decided not to film a sequel. One of the guides knew a little about the ship and asked if I remembered the captain Richard Bailey. I replied “dick” and he said he thought he went by Richard. I told him I remembered him as being a dick……………
Anyway they let me on despite my attitude and it was good to see that old lady again. The galley had returned to a gun deck, and they let me look in the food prep area where I fondly remembered working with a piece of dried ginger in my mouth to help with the rolling sea. The crew quarters looked, well in a word………..unbearable. I’m still not sure how I got into that top bunk, always stopping to visit the young lady who slept below me while I took the time to apologize for stepping on her hand, again. Good times and a good trip with Jay some 14 years ago.
I knew Southwest had an earlier flight to Sacramento so I left downtown bound for the airport on a rickshaw. Yes, first time for that, I felt like a genuine dingbatter. My driver missed a turn, that’s hard to believe isn’t it, but we got to the terminal and he charged me twice what a cab would have been; that’s OK, now I know why he pulled up in front of the cop to let me out. Karma
Into the airport to see if I can fly standby on the earlier flight, no problem sir, that’s +$80. To fly standby…………….what happened to changing a flight? Wish I’d just stayed uptown and walked around
Time for a little lunch and hey look, there’s only one seat open at the Chili’s Express and there is a beautiful young lady sitting there with an odd shaped pocketbook. “May I sit here?” “Sure” The next thing I know Cujo is coming out of the pocketbook trying to bite me. “He never does that”……………….My thoughts were that perhaps that little Chihuahua (who I called Chi Chi for the rest of my adventure) must be a pretty good judge of character
And so the plane landed safely in Sacramento and I got a call from home telling me that it rained and we have water coming through the sheetrock in the kitchen…………..again. Turns out it was the AC unit drain, or non-drain causing the problems. Some days, I tell you, some days………………..
Then the hotel tells me that yes, a shuttle goes to their hotel, but not “their” shuttle. I need to book a reservation with the Shuttle Express……………..
Worked around northern CA and got a few things done, and it seemed as though my luck was turning, right up to the point when TAR texted me that United called and told her my Friday flight home is cancelled. Wonder how that will turn out………..
It upsets me to waste time and money like this but maybe just maybe I got all of my scrambled eggs out of the way for a while. Man I sure hope so.

Now for your viewing entertainment and to preserve what's left of my sanity something lighter: pictures and videos from my past week in the great state of CA:
HMS Rose, renamed the Surprise:
My new friends, courtesy of the Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza in Irvine, CA:

Ever ride in a rickshaw? Save your $25, here's your view:
The 12 meter Stars and Stripes, I think was a later version, I think Connor's winning boat was a lighter shade of blue, but still majestic to watch this old beauty stretch her legs
Napa Valley at speed, all of the farmers came out as we rode by and yelled "thank your wife for us!"
And not a bad shot of San Francisco from the Bay Bridge, especially considering I was in a car.... Alcatraz can be seen through the fog bank, the city is on the left
My favorite restaurant
Does the word "Trion" look familiar to you?
A fond farewell to the Edwards family is scheduled for this Sunday, we will miss each member of that family and wish them well in Lynchburg VA. Ohio next week, and we continue to wait for Annabel..................

A Little Cleanup

A few items from the past week or so as my summer slowdown continues; my goal for the summer is to spend less than five minutes on this blog. Yes I know, you can tell I didn't put much effort into this.
A short video of little Miss Keelyn getting upset because it is time to go to Sanford. She honestly had been very good all week, this was a semi-blowup although nothing like others we have seen..........
The pine cone is in the sun room for decoration, you can hear SWMBO in the background repeating this is the "first time" and it was.....................
And our lonesome dove finally left the nest early this week. Appropriate that it would be the same day Andy died, because that cage looks mighty empty now, but don't the trees look nice and full? If you don't know what that means Google "Opie the Birdman" and watch it. That and the episode about Annabelle and Tom Silby are my favorites; oddly enough the latter episode is not mentioned as one of Andy or the Mayberry fan club's top ten. I guess it has to do with ratios, poor Horatio................ Losing Andy really feels like the loss of a family member; well if that don't beat all.
And this from the FO as a suggestion; no, it would never work, maybe I could just try it without the trailer?
The BMW is for sale, 5.0% commission to anyone who gives me a good lead at a fair price. I have it on Craig's List, the BMW MOA website and the BMW Motorcycle Mailing list site, maybe I have it priced too high? OK, $3500.
So thirty two years ago on Tuesday night my daddy and I watched The John Wayne version of The Alamo on TV, I poured a JW Red and hit the sack about 11:00 PM and about 5 minutes later TAR's water broke. Later the next morning, right about in the middle of the fourth set of Bjorn Borg's fifth Wimbledon championship Jay was born. Happy birthday little fellow, well I guess you're not that little anymore; we're mighty proud of you and all you have done. I know you will continue to be a good father, husband and productive citizen. Keep it up.

Summer Shortcuts Continue

A great beach week, keeping Keelyn was a pleasure beyond belief! She was so agreeable, and this was the first time we kept her alone; having children should be so easy.
After a short visit with Dink, I taped the following (copy link address in new tab):
file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/John%20Riley/Desktop/Memo.m4a     not sure this will work, if it doesn't, send a text to 252.725.0924 and I will send it to you
See if you can understand her, we did!
And a short video:

  • Problems with bike carburetor linkage, getting it fixed and then up for sale
  • Elizabethown for Presbytery meeting, saw a lot of familiar faces
  • Neighborhood family had a little girl, Sarah Campbell Morrow
  • Getting to the short rows for our expected Annabel Faye Riley
  • Went to Oriental last week to look at a bike, saw this:

Thank God TAR didn't let us move there. Beach Week starts...............tomorrow, are you prepared?

Happy Father's Day

And being the proud grandparents we are, here is the young scholar upon graduation. Good to see that he seems to follow in the male Riley tradition of not knowing how to smile for a picture......

And yes, VIDEO!No, I don't know how to rotate the image, sorry
Messing around making calls in SC and I saw this in a BMW M3 on my way home Thursday afternoon. I'm not sure if the camera does the matching hairdo justice, it was after all a Mohawk.

First Father's Day without a father for both TAR and me, little different but we can handle it.

Since Last We Talked.......................

SWMBO and I went to Sanford and saw #1 grandson graduate; pictures and/or video to follow (as soon as I receive some, we forgot the camera and the phones were in the car............memories). It was a fun morning followed by dropping TAR off at the mall and making calls.
FO and I went fishing all day Saturday; it was a little rough but we went outside anyway, visions of black sea bass danced in our heads, but alas mighty slim pickens; I'll try again tomorrow. Someone asked how I knew how long it had been since the CC was in the water; I hear that people with OCD keep logs on subjects such as this. I still think it should be called CDO, then the letters would be in alphabetical order. But then again I still worry about whether or not I should put a hyphen in anal-retentive. What are your thoughts Hobson?
Let's go racing; who do you think would win? I know for certain it will not be Kurt Busch this weekend. Wonder if James Finch has tried to call me? Wellllllllllllllllllllllll, we're waiting..................

The grapes are coming in, maybe we'll get to try a couple this year if the animals will be so kind. Speaking of animals, actually reptiles I guess; our neighborhood has become copperhead central. Anyone know of good ways to keep them from around the house? Little bastards................

Our little ones have flow away, good thing the copperheads didn't know they were in the wreath on the front door. They were fun for a while but the guano was really building up

Speaking of building up guano, I worked in South Carolina all week, saw an interesting sign in Lexington at a drive through beer stand:
"Our beer is as cold as your ex-wife's heart" Very descriptive.
Overheard on the radio last week:  "did you buy gas?"  "that's a confirmative"

Gotta wonder....................
Next to my hotel this week there was a Presbyterian church named Saxe Gotha. Any ideas? Guess I could look it up, just wondering how intelligent my readers are..................JK, I know, oh I know. See, I figure if you are really that smart then you're probably not wasting your valuable time reading this guano. Again the blog goes full circle, it is the game of life.
And this is here because it is funny.

RIP my IL/WI representative Steve Klym and my favorite television outdoors man Franc White.
I was supposed to head to Ohio next week but that trip is falling through, think I'll finish up SC in...............wait a second, I know you're reading this so I'm not telling.
Congratulations to Kevin and Heather; another Riley girl is on the way. Dinkey Duke works in so many ways; good luck with the pregnancy.

Juneau ??? Alaska !!! Alaskan Adventure 2026   Thursday, June 6 : We left Morehead City midday and drove to Cary. Elizabeth and Jackson were...
